POSITION
Checkerboards prefer places that are fully or partially sunlit, sheltered from the wind. We plant tall species in flower beds, and lower species also in rock gardens.
SOIL
They grow best in permeable and humus soil, with a pH close to neutral.
PLANTING
Large bulbs are planted 20 cm deep and at least 40 cm apart. If they grow too densely, they stop blooming quickly and need to be kept apart. The smaller ones are planted 6-8 cm deep with a spacing of 10 cm.
CARE
When the first frost is approaching, the bulbs in the soil should be covered to protect them from freezing. Straw is best for this, but there may also be leaves. In the spring, when the growing season begins, remove the cover. It is also then that fertilization should be started. For the plants to develop well, we spread the multi-component fertilizer and gently mix it with the soil. In the case of long-lasting moisture, its onions may rot, so we choose slightly elevated places in the beds so that the water from rainfall can drain freely.
STORAGE
If we are going to store the bulbs, it is worth choosing an airy place where it is not too hot. Generally, however, we leave the chessboards in the same place for several years.
